Here are examples of my technical writing, along with visuals and videos I’ve created to accompany them or as standalone examples. Most of these samples were created as assignments while I was completing my BA in English, with a focus in technical communication (Current Resume). Several of them were created for and are being used by actual clients, such as the social media guide created as part of a team for the Common Man Tap and Table restaurant and the FAQ page for The Hub, Center for Health and Beauty (where I worked at the time).
Communication
Manuals, videos, and guides aimed to communicate specific steps or ideas.
This assignment asked us to create a FAQ page for an existing business’s website. I created this page for The Hub, Center for Health and Beauty, my workplace at the time, to answer common patient questions about services, payment, and more.

This assignment asked us to create a 3-5-minute procedural video with captions. I chose to show how to add a new contact to the Nextiva One application. This application was used in my workplace at the time and was still new to most of the staff.

This assignment asked us to take a recent study in the health field and condense it down to a short article for AARP magazine.

In this assignment, we were asked to create a manual. I created a manual for one of my favorite games, The Sims 4, on how to add custom content.

This assignment asked us to conduct a usability study on a website. Unlike a typical study that involves multiple participants and rounds of testing, this assignment was intended to give us a better understanding of the process of conducting usability studies and, as such, required only one participant and one round of testing.

Style Guides
Guides that were written as part of team projects.
For this project, we worked in teams to create style guides for actual clients. My team created a style guide for a small restaurant in Wisconsin. Here is the completed project, along with a slide presentation that shows the clients how the guide was created, how to use it, and contact information for further questions.

This class project asked us to write a brand guide for the fictional balloon company ACME. In addition to contributing to my team’s chapters, I worked with another classmate as a technical editor to check the final document for consistency with the style guide we used to write it.

Safety Documentation
I work part-time for my current employer, an acupuncture clinic. They had recently moved to a new location, and, along with updated evacuation routes for the clinic rooms, it was decided to update the other safety documents. Given my background and knowledge of the company, I offered to revise these documents or, in some cases, create them from scratch. This project is still undergoing its final revisions, given recent staffing shortages that have management focusing on more time-sensitive aspects of the business.
The first document I tackled was the Emergency Plan. If the company had one before the move, it was lost along the way, so I started by researching OSHA, FEMA, and both local and national government websites to make sure everything was covered. Some elements of this plan still require input from management, such as the evacuation meeting point and the requirements for securing the location in the event of hurricanes. Those will be added once final decisions have been made. I’ve also removed or blocked out some information, such as management’s name/contact numbers.

Next, the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Binder was developed. The company had a Hazard Communication document but did not have the rest of the SDS Binder together. In this case, I took inventory of the chemicals used in the business, reviewed OSHA guidelines for SDS binders, located the required safety data sheets, and finally revised the Hazard Communication Standard. The SDSs are not shared here, as they’re documents from each product company and there are numerous, but the place where they can be found is clear in the binder document.

A Bloodborne Pathogen Plan is needed because this business is an acupuncture clinic. The company had one, but it had not been updated since the move. After reviewing it and researching the requirements, I updated the document. Due to the staff shortage, some of the training material for this plan that should be included has been lost and hasn’t been rewritten yet.

Finally, we have the new floor plan for evacuation. This diagram has been modified for each office room, with a “you are here” and arrows outlining possible escape routes in case of an evacuation. The building the company moved into didn’t have any floor plans for the remodeled space, so I created one by taking approximate measurements of each room and using Microsoft Visio to design the floor plan. The diagram here is the base one for reference.

Visuals
Documents that are more visual based.
In this assignment, we were asked to create a one-page infographic that represents a part of their annual report. I chose to look at Meta Materials Inc. (META), which develops metamaterials to create new high-performance materials. This infographic was created using Visme and some of the new technologies Metamaterials had worked on in 2021.

The Health Hub is the medical side of the Hub Center for Health and Beauty, where I currently work part-time as an assistant and LMT. We needed a new service menu that’s easy to read and update with specials. Here’s the menu I designed for May 2022.
